​In the late medieval period, Catholicism was one of the richest religious institutions of the time, if not the richest. One of the main causes that allowed for this to happen was the act of indulgences. After paying for their sins, Jesus will say a “personalized prayer” to the payer and give a heartfelt “God bless you”.
